  • Letter to Governor Pritzker regarding gymnastic facilities

May 18, 2020

Dear Governor J.B. Pritzker,

On behalf of the constituents of House District 51, I would like to discuss the restrictions placed on gymnastic facilities. With the current restrictions in place, gymnastic facilities will not re-open in Phase 3 of Restore Illinois . This is devastating for the elite athletes who have dedicated their whole lives to this sport. Gymnastic facilities should be allowed to open in Phase 3.

In addition, gymnastic facilities should not be considered under the same domain as regular ‘exercise locations.’ This is because gymnastic facilities can control the sterilization of their
environment far better than other exercise locations. Indeed, most gymnastic facilities are much larger than more confined exercise locations. Furthermore, owners of these facilities can easily undertake guidelines such as:

● Keeping classes between 2 – 4 children.
● Purchasing and implementing infrared scanners.
● Staggering classes.
● Rigorous cleaning of all exercise equipment between intermissions.
● Maintaining one exit and entrance.
● Children having their own space and not sharing equipment.

If the government is allowing for sports like baseball and basketball to resume activities, then it is only just for gymnastics facilities to also re-open. Thus, I am imploring you to expand Phase 3 to encompass gymnastic facilities. We can flatten the curve together and offer a respected recreational activity that helps Illinoisians and athletes. I look forward to hearing back from you.

Respectfully,
Rep. Mary Edly-Allen 51st District of Illinois
